Shea Butter: Sensitive Skin's Best Friend

December 14, 2017

What is Shea Butter?

Shea butter is a fatty ingredient obtained from the nuts of the shea (karate) tree. The tree is best known as the “tree of life” or “women’s gold,” in West and Eastern Africa. It can used topically as well as used as a vegetable cooking oil in meals. It is produced by removing the outer shell of the nut and a slow roasting process to extract the butter from the crushed nuts. Once this process is completed, the butter is pressed by hand in a large wash basin of water to separate the oil and fatty acids. The final product of shea butter is removed off the top and cooled until it hardens.

Skincare Benefits of Shea Butter

Raw (unrefined) shea butter is an all-around excellent product that you need in your skincare arsenal. It is packed with natural vitamins A and E, which helps to soothe skin sensitivities, such as dermatitis, tone skin blemishes, delay the production of wrinkles, and help prevent stretch marks during pregnancy. In its raw state, shea butter is extremely moisturizing and very hydrating, intended for quick absorption, leaving skin soft and smooth. Still not convinced? Here are a few more reasons why you need this in your skincare routine:

1. Sensitive Skin Friendly

Raw shea butter is a great natural moisturizer for dry, itchy or irritated skin. Application of this skin-nourishing ingredient, will leave your skin hydrated, well-conditioned with a healthy glow.

2. Youth promoting Properties

Studies show that raw shea butter has great anti-aging qualities that help with skin cell regeneration, and the reduction of the appearance of wrinkles. It has also been shown to boost collagen production, which helps to keep skin strong.

3. It’s a 2-in-1

Shea butter can be used topically on your skin and scalp. It is great to for conditioning hair and seals in moisture, helping to provide protection from harsh climates.

HOW we use it.

Because it is such a great ingredient for all skin-types including sensitive skin, we use shea butter in all our All Over Body Balm products, to help keep your skin looking hydrated, conditioned, youthful and healthy. Try our fragrance free if you have ultra-sensitive skin. Use All Over Body Balm after your bath or shower while skin pores are still open to lock in moisture for the day. Our balm doubles as a 2-in-1 for a conditioning hair and scalp treatment. Apply a small amount to boost moisture for dry ends or use as a warm oil treatment. Apply to hair and leave on for 20 min with a shower cap. Then shampoo, condition and style as usual.
